Dr. John Bonamo is an accomplished obstetrician/gynecologist and a hospital executive with extensive experience in transformational leadership. After joining Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC, now Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center) in 1981, he became highly respected throughout the community for his many years of dedication to women’s health. He held many leadership positions at SBMC, and, ultimately, as president and CEO, he introduced numerous clinical programs, led a cultural transformation, spearheaded the building of a destination campus, and oversaw the institution’s complete financial turnaround to become one of New Jersey’s most profitable hospitals. Dr. Bonamo later served as Executive Vice President, Chief Medical and Quality Officer, at RWJBarnabas Health, where he led an initiative to improve clinical outcomes and deliver safe, high-quality care to patients. As the health system’s foremost expert on COVID-19, he also provided sound clinical judgment and a steady hand during the statewide response to the global pandemic.
Dr. Bonamo earned his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Saint Barnabas Medical Center; he received a master’s degree in health care management from Harvard University. He serves as an adjunct lecturer at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health and is a visiting professor at the University of Beijing. He has received numerous industry awards and has been named one of the nation’s top chief medical officers five times by Becker’s Hospital Review.
